About the project: Logline: “God is a Pelican” is a stop-motion animated short that follows two misfit middle-school girls’ intense, queer, and turbulent friendship as they create their own religion. Synopsis: Josie and Madi hang upside down from a tree, like bats. Before them is a sticky green pond, home to their divine entity: a derpy white pelican. It is here, amongst the mossy trees and mosquitoes, that Madi and Josie have been plotting their religion, a religion for the weirdos and "others" of the world. However, as the religion grows and disciples gather, the girls begin to turn on each other. Madi becomes more confident, both in her strangeness and queerness, while Josie's gender dysphoria and insecurity intensify as she feels Madi slipping away. After playground sermons, midnight pond baptisms, and unruly followers, the religion sparks a school-wide panic, which ultimately leads to a Judas-like betrayal. This film takes place in Colorado in 2012. Rate: $100 flat rate, $20/hr for rerecordings. Estimated time commitment of 6 hours before rerecordings.
