About the play: Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy has been told time and time again: two teenagers fighting against fate and family in the face of true love. Everyone knows the story. But as time has gone on, people have slowly begun to forget the importance of theatre and Shakespeare. Surrey Upon Avon aims to revive teenagers’ appreciation for theatre in its first production, Romeo and Juliet. This radical take on the classic play set in the vibrant 70s is youth-led, widely-accessible, and an amazing chance for teenagers looking to get involved in their community. Titular characters Juliet and her Romeo head the show in their quick, reckless love, but characters like Mercutio, Friar Lawrence, and the nurse steal the audience’s hearts with hilarious lines and emotional moments. This comedy-turned-tragedy pulls the audience in only to send them out shaken, heartbroken, and reminded of why theatre matters in the first place. Additional information: PERFORMANCE DATES: Evenings: May 21/22/28/29 Matinee: May 22/23/29/30 This is all subject to change. Audition Requirements: - Actors must be in secondary school (grade 8-12) to audition for the show. - Actors must be present for all rehearsals, which will take place in South Surrey, exact location TBD. There will be one or two preliminary meetings in November, and a break during December. Rehearsals will start in January until the performances in May. - Actor age and gender does not matter for ANY ROLE.
