Confined to a windowless hospital room, he slowly suffocates under illness and a fractured family. When the patient in the next bed dies, something in him breaks. He pulls out his tubes and leaves. He wants to see his older sister Lisa, who has been injured and can no longer walk. Against medical advice, he leaves with his wife, Hana, his daughter, Cathy, and his grandson, Ryan. On the journey, something in him begins to loosen. A small encounter shifts him, as if for the first time, he realizes he is still alive. At Lisa’s house, the past surfaces. She tells him he never truly left, that he has remained in the same corner of the past. James responds for the first time. Sitting across from Hana, he speaks what he has long held inside. She responds calmly, pushing a dish toward him and tapping the table twice. He recognizes the gesture. They eat in silence. At dusk, he waters a dying plant. A message from the hospital asks him to return for the new examination results. He does not call back. He breathes, watching a white butterfly drift past the window. He does not leave. Rate: Paid.
