About the project: The show concerns the repressed residents of an unnamed American town in the 1950s who experience an awakening when a leather-clad guitar-strumming roustabout rolls into town. The story takes inspiration from the comedies of William Shakespeare, particularly Twelfth Night,[1] and explores a number of themes, such as authoritarianism and segregation. Additional info: Please prepare a 32-bar (~60-second) cut from a song that fits the style of the show and suits your voice. This is a musical based on the music of Elvis, so consider songs from pop/rock musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Bye Bye Birdie, Rock of Ages, or Aida, or songs by Elvis’ contemporaries like Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Doris Day, Tom Jones, or Barry Manilow. Selections from the show are also encouraged. If you are auditioning for a lead who belts, we need to hear you belt! Avoid musicals from very different genres (“Les Mis”, for example, will not tell directors how your voice will fit into this show!) Your audition should be memorized and show your ability to portray the character’s emotions, mannerisms, etc. Dance will not be done until the invitational callback. Please bring a device to play your accompaniment track on, such as a smartphone. Note that a participation fee will be applied. REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will be held 3 times per week: Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays 6-9 pm. Tech Week rehearsals are mandatory and will be Sun 5/3 through Thurs 5/7, 5-9pm.
