About the project: In 1944 Greenwich Village, Susan Hendrix, a blind yet capable woman, is imperiled by a trio of men in her own apartment. As the climax builds, Susan discovers that her blindness just might be the key to her escape, but she and her tormentors must wait until dark to play out this classic thriller’s chilling conclusion. Recently blinded in a car accident, Susan is desperately trying to regain some of the independence she has lost. She is deeply in love with her husband, Sam, whom she met while both were hospitalized.
Susan’s husband. Sam was a wartime photographer who saw action in Italy. His wartime experience has left him “shell shocked,” or as we would say today, PTSD. He has a tendency towards treating Susan with “tough love” as he is always pushing her to perfect her skills at managing her blindness.
Harry Roat, Jr., From Scarsdale. He is a pure psychopath. He shows absolutely no empathy for any other person. People are just tools to him, things to be discarded the minute they no longer serve his purpose.
Mike Tallman is a former Marine Lieutenant and full time con man. Not a bad guy, just a guy who had no other options in life. Shows sympathy for Susan, much to the dismay of Roat.
CARLINO is a former cop turned small-time crook. Not the brightest bulb, he serves Roat’s purpose…until he doesn’t.
Gloria is a young girl (12 to 14) who lives upstairs from Sam and Susan. Her father has left her mother. She often tries to escape her dysfunctional home life by hiding in Sam and Susan’s apartment. She can be bratty at times, but in the end she helps Susan. N.B. During the final scene the lights on stage and in the theater will be dimmed to the lowest level legally allowed. It will be VERY dark. Actors portraying Susan and Roat must be able to navigate the stage in near total darkness.
