She is both the street-smart young woman who’s experienced the tribulations of the new Russia and the regal Grand Duchess Anastasia who grew up a princess and disappeared in fire. At the start, she has no memory of her life before age 17 but lives with PTSD and the ghosts of that lost time. She has learned to be strong in herself and though her life has been nothing short of tragedy, still has hope beyond reason. She is determined to find who she is and with that a better life filled with love
At the surface, Dmitry is one with the streets, willing and able to survive by the wit, charm, and nerve. At his core, he is a pure soul with a soft heart. Dmitry’s comedic timing and sardonic one-liners mask a lost boy with no roots and fear of no future. His journey and growing feelings for Anya transform him from a rat and liar to caring deeply for others, choosing their happiness over his own.
Vlad is Dmitry’s partner in crime (literally) and surrogate father. Before the revolution he scammed his way through society pretending to be a count. Vlad is dramatic, crafty, and a big softie at heart. While he, like Dmitry, is not above lying, cheating, and stealing, he cares greatly for his loved ones and is generally affable, though he can be calculating when he needs to be.
A young official and true believer of the New Russia, his passionate nationalism and grasping to climb the ladder for country set him as the villain of Anastasia’s journey. He embodies the regime’s hand as a product of its nurture. A deeply conflicted person, Gleb’s infatuation (and borderline obsession) with Anya leads to his battle with the idea of doing one’s duty vs. doing what is right. Controlled movement and intense emotional growth necessary.
Lily is the lady in waiting to the Dowager Empress and shown to be perhaps her only remaining friend. She has been by the Dowager’s side since before the revolution. Lily is clever and loyal to the Dowager. But when with the other exiles and elite of Paris, a light ball of energy in the jazz age. She masks the pain of the past with vodka, dancing, and dark humor.
Anastasia’s grandmother, she lost everything and everyone (except Lily) on that night in 1917. She is icy, proud, and regal from a lifetime of ruling followed by a decade of intense grief. She is warm only to Anastasia, though also maternal to the rest of the family. She commands authority and attention the minute she enters a room. Strong presence is necessary.
Father to Anastasia. Warm and loving to his children and stoic in his official role. Flicker in and out of memories throughout the show. Potential to double with ensemble tracks
Mother to Anastasia. Not as warm as her husband as her regality shines in every movement. Flicker in and out of memories throughout the show.
Sisters to Anastasia that flicker in and out of memories throughout the show. Likely to double with Neva Club Servers or other dance heavy ensemble tracks.

Member of the Russian Exiles that is attempting to be recognized as inheriting the entire Romanov estate from the Dowager Empress. A bit slimy and reaching, but arrogant. Anya recognizes them from the past therefore age will be relative to Anya and other Romanovs.
Superior to Gleb in the Communist party. An imposing presence that represents the overarching hand of the political system. They set the tension and example over Gleb to complete their task to the very end.
