Singing Audition for "Shrek" Musical
Performers in grades 6th-12th are invited to audition for "Shrek" Musical. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: Follow the unlikely hero, Shrek, a gruff but lovable ogre, as he embarks on a daring quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona—joined by his loyal (and endlessly chatty) companion, Donkey. Along the way, they encounter a host of fairy tale misfits, a scheming Lord Farquaad, and plenty of surprises. Filled with catchy songs, outrageous humor, and a touching message about friendship, acceptance, and embracing who you are, Shrek the Musical (Youth Edition) is a fun-filled celebration of big laughs and even bigger hearts. Additional info: What to Prepare: A 32-bar (30-60 seconds) cut of a song in the style of the show. One of the preselected monologues from the show (these will made available closer to auditions). A big-hearted but gruff ogre who has lived in isolation his whole life. While initially defensive and sarcastic, Shrek has a deep vulnerability. Over the course of the musical, he learns to let others in and love himself. Requires strong comedic timing, physicality, and emotional depth. Vocal Range: Baritone (A2–G#4)
A quirky, feisty, and slightly neurotic princess who has been waiting for her “happily ever after.” She hides a curse that turns her into an ogre nightly. Her upbeat, independent spirit and comedic chops are crucial. Needs strong comedic timing and vocal control to navigate both traditional princess and zany comedy. Vocal Range: Soprano with strong belt (F3–G5)
Shrek’s loyal, motor-mouthed sidekick. Endlessly upbeat, funny, and fiercely loyal, Donkey provides comic relief but also heartfelt support. Requires excellent comedic timing, physical comedy, and soulful singing. Vocal Range: Tenor (C3–B4)
The hilariously villainous, narcissistic, and height-challenged ruler of Duloc. He exiles all fairy tale creatures and wants to marry Fiona to become king. Performed on knees with puppet legs. Must have strong comedic presence and exaggerated physicality. Vocal Range: Baritone (B2–D5)
A fiery, soulful dragon who guards Fiona and eventually falls in love with Donkey. Needs a powerhouse voice. Vocal Range: Alto/Mezzo (F3–Eb5)
A cookie with a big attitude. Requires strong comedic voice work. Vocal Range: Soprano (B3–C#5)
The wooden boy whose nose grows when he lies. He is one of the leading voices in “Freak Flag.” Often performed in falsetto. Comedic and physically animated. Vocal Range: Tenor (E3–F#4)
A fairy tale creature dressed in grandma’s clothing. Sassy, strong ensemble presence. Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor
Classic green-skinned witch with flair. Part of the ensemble and fairy tale creatures, often has solos or comedic bits. Vocal Range: Mezzo
German-accented pigs with flair. Provide comic support in group numbers and scenes. Strong character singing required. Vocal Range: Tenor/Baritone and Mezzo/Soprano
