About the project: In Into the Woods JR., the beloved characters of Brothers Grimm fairy tales come together in a magical, musical adventure that explores what happens after "happily ever after." The story begins with three classic characters, each making a wish: Cinderella wishes to go to the King’s Festival, Jack wishes his cow would give milk, and a Baker and his Wife wish for a child. Suddenly, a mysterious Witch appears and reveals that the Baker’s family has been cursed with childlessness because the Baker’s father once stole magic beans from her garden. She tells them the curse can be reversed—if they find four special items: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. The Baker and his Wife set off into the woods, determined to collect the items and break the curse. On their journey, they encounter Little Red Ridinghood, on her way to visit her Granny, and cross paths with the Wolf, who has plans of his own. They also meet Jack, who reluctantly sells his beloved cow, Milky-White, for a handful of magic beans. Jack’s beanstalk adventure brings him face to face with a giant—and a fortune in gold. Meanwhile, Cinderella escapes her cruel Stepmother and Stepsisters and attends the royal festival with help from her mother’s magical spirit. A charming but indecisive Prince pursues her, and Cinderella must decide whether the life she wished for is the one she truly wants. Rapunzel, locked away in a tower by the Witch who raised her, also longs for freedom and finds it in her own Prince, though her mother’s overprotectiveness threatens their happiness. As the Baker and his Wife collect the needed items (often through clever or questionable means), they succeed in breaking the Witch’s curse. Jack is rich, Cinderella is married, the Baker and his Wife have a child, and everything seems perfect. The Narrator is the storyteller who speaks directly to the audience. This character helps control the pace of the show and always needs to be ready for their next entrance, as they pop in and out throughout the story.
Cinderella is a simple peasant girl whose one wish is to go to the Festival. Unfortunately, when her wish comes true, she learns that wishes sometimes come with consequences. Cinderella’s inner beauty always shines through her sometimes clumsy and awkward exterior.
Jack is an energetic young man who is always looking for an adventure. He begins this show as a “simple” little boy and his best friend is his cow. By the end of the show, he learns a few valuable lessons.
Jack’s Mother is a bit frazzled and overworked. She is raising a son and running a farm all by herself. She has great comic timing and many singing parts.
The Baker is a good-hearted, likeable person who believes he can take on the Witch’s curse all by himself. At first, this confidence and desire to have a child drives him, but he soon learns he needs the help of his wife to accomplish the goal.
The Baker’s wife is a strong, determined and loving woman whose desire to have a child drives the action of the whole show. Her storyline helps tie all the character’s storylines together. She has very good comic timing and many songs.
Cinderella’s Step sisters are spoiled brats who care only about themselves and marrying Cinderella’s Prince.

Little Red starts the show as a loud, bratty, pushy glutton who happily manipulates people and situations to get her way. Eventually, she learns some valuable lessons and softens around the edges. She should have a loud projection and powerful voice.
The Witch is an ancient, mysterious and manipulative woman who will do anything possible to regain her beauty and protect Rapunzel who is locked away in a tower. While she may seem old and haggard, she still has the strength to control other people. This Actress must have a strong singing voice and stage presents
Cinderella’s Prince is a conceited man who adamantly pursues Cinderella and can’t take no for an answer. When not chasing her, he is trying to “show up” Rapunzel’s Prince, trying to appear better. This singer needs to have a strong voice.
Cinderella’s Father will not win any Father-of-the-year awards. He doesn’t care about his daughter’s well-being or her actions. This role requires only ensemble signing , and no solo singing.
Cinderella’s Mother comforts cinderella in her one short song. She has no dialogue, however she has a song she sings to Cinderella at the Grave.
Rapunzel has been stuck in a tower for the majority of her life. Finally, she stands up to the witch in order to get out to see the world.
Rapunzel’s Prince is a pompous and arrogant brother of Cinderella’s Prince. Sibling rivalry runs rampant between the brothers, including each brother’s belief that his lady love is the most beautiful.
Just like the name suggests, this is one mysterious man. Everything he does is to help the Baker, but he does not explain his motives unil the last moment. This role is ensemble singing only.
The Wolf is a sly and dangerous character intently focused on attacking Little Red Ridinghood. This actor needs to be comfortable with being creepy and dark.
The Steward is the servant of Cinderella’s Prince. He is dependable and willing to do whatever Cinderella’s Prince asks.
