About the project: “In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.” Additional info: Please note: there is a production fee applied. Tenor (C3–A4), strong rapper. The charismatic narrator and owner of the local bodega. A first-generation Dominican-American. Fast-talking, funny, and thoughtful. A strong rapper and singer who carries much of the show.
Mezzo-Soprano (F3–F5), strong belt/pop singer, The “golden child” of the barrio. Smart, driven, and recently returned from her first year at Stanford. Navigates the pressure of expectations and cultural identity. Requires strong emotional and vocal range.
Tenor (Ab2–Ab4), R&B/pop singer, rap skills, Ambitious and charming. Works at the Rosarios’ dispatch. In love with Nina. Must sing smoothly and rap clearly, with strong stage presence and heart.
Mezzo-Soprano/Belter (F3–E5), strong belt/pop singer, Bold and determined. Works at Daniela’s salon but dreams of getting out of the Heights. Needs strong belt vocals, dance ability, and presence.
Tenor/Rap (C3–Bb4), Usnavi’s smart-aleck cousin, full of passion and wit. A great comic actor with good timing. Primarily a rapper, but also sings ensemble harmonies.
Alto (F#3–C5), The loving matriarch of the neighborhood. Warm, wise, and deeply rooted in her faith and memories. Needs strong emotional depth and a beautiful storytelling voice.
Alto/Belter (G3–E5), The no-nonsense, hilarious salon owner. Loud, bold, and full of life. Strong comedic actress with excellent belting ability.
Soprano/Belter (F3–D5) Daniela’s sweet and slightly ditzy assistant. A bubbly, comedic role with great harmony and ensemble involvement. Needs solid comedic instincts.
Baritone (A2–E4), Nina’s father. A proud, traditional Puerto Rican man who values hard work and sacrifice. Sings with emotion and strength. Needs commanding presence.
Alto (G3–B4), Nina’s mother and the emotional center of the Rosario family. Strong-willed, pragmatic, and loving. One big solo moment that requires power and control.
Non-singing role (Strong Dancer)A young graffiti artist with flair and energy. Often misunderstood but ultimately helpful. Great role for a dancer or physical performer.
Tenor (D3–A4) The cheerful, optimistic vendor of piraguas (shaved ice). Competes with Mister Softee and represents tradition. A featured role with a warm solo and strong vocals.
