About the project: The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. The Cat in the HatMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The story's enthusiastic, clever, and funny narrator with very high energy. The Cat is fun loving, wise and attentive, and also enjoys rhyming. Pops up throughout the story to help the audience. Should be comfortable moving/dancing quickly and adapting to the environment.

JojoMale8-12 y.o.All ethnicities

The Mayor's son, he is a Who that is always finding trouble. Bright, creative, and inadvertently mischievous. Possesses a wildly expansive imagination and finds solace in his friendship with Horton.

Horton the ElephantMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

A compassionate and gentle elephant. Commonly misunderstood. Teased and mocked by the other because he believes that there are tiny people speaking to him from a small speck of dust that he carries around on a clover. He is protective and loving of all creatures in the jungle.

Gertrude McFuzzFemale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Horton's one-feathered-tail bird neighbor. Gertrude is sweet and timid. She has had a long-term crush on Horton, but she remains frustrated over the fact that he seems completely unaware of how she feels about him. Though kind and loyal, she is also self-conscious of her one-feathered tail, and desperately wants a beautiful, multi-feathered tail like Mayzie.

Mayzie La BirdFemale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The Sour KangarooFemale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The 'leader' of the jungle. She is loud, brassy, unabashedly sassy and soulful, and a lot of fun. Bird GirlsFemale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The Bird Girls are a fabulous group of birds who know everything there is to know about the goings on in the jungle and support Mayzie throughout the show. They often serve as narrators for certain parts of the play when the Cat is busy portraying another character in the story.
