Casting Call for Boys and Girls for Play "Once on This Island"
Auditions for the upcoming production of "Once on This Island". Auditions are open to teens, and children in Grades 3 and up. For children and teens, please indicate your current grade level. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: Once on this Island is a musical based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy. The novel, in turn, is itself a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.” Only there are no literal mermaids: in this tale of “two different worlds never meant to meet,” a peasant girl falls in love with a prince. As stories are told and retold, lives are made and remade. The original Broadway script is set in Haiti and makes reference to racial conflict there. For amateur groups, however, the musical’s authors provide several line edits, conveying the story’s universal message using a fairy tale class divide. We hope to continue to grow our troupe of performers, and to bring in new and diverse talent as we tell this beautiful story. A recording of an excellent production with the alternate lyrics, which we'll also be using, can be found here. Additional info: There are casting opportunities for principal characters, featured storytellers, and ensemble. These flexible casting options provide possibilities for individual acting, singing, or dancing features. All are welcome and encouraged to try out! As always, we can use help with offstage production components, so please reach out if you’d like to participate behind the scenes! Callbacks will be held on January 5. Rehearsals will begin on January 9. We rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays (6-9 pm), and on Sundays (1-5 pm). Not everyone will be needed for every rehearsal. Performances will be held in the evening on March 20, 21, & 22, with matinees on March 22 & 23. People must be available for all performances as well as tech week, beginning March 16. If interested, please apply.
