Casting Call for Boys and Girls for "Hairspray" Stage Play
Casting call for boys and girls for the "Hairspray" stage production. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. Additional info: The directors will ask you to prepare two contrasting songs and bring sheet music for both. In most cases, the directors will only have you sing one of the two songs you’ve prepared. We do not require all Auditioners to stay for dance auditions. For those wishing to be cast in minor roles or ensemble roles, you may leave after your vocal audition with no penalty. If you plan to audition for the following roles: Tracy, Amber, Link, Seaweed, Little Inez, or Principle Dancer you MUST STAY FOR A DANCE AUDITION, so please select your audition slot with that in mind. You may come to any of the 4 dance auditions, not just the one closest to your slot. Callbacks for lead roles will be held on Sunday, January 12th from 2-4:30 pm by invitation only. The directors will send out invites no later than midnight on Saturday, January 11th, and will not require any extra prepared music or sides for the callback. All cast members must be available for three full-cast rehearsals in the evenings on April 5th, 6th, and 9th, and shows on April 11th at 7:30 pm, April 12th at 6:30 pm, and April 13th at 2:00 pm. Our story's unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. Vocal range: Belting Mezzo-Soprano. G3-G5. Singing style: characterized by a powerful belt with a bright, optimistic tone. Important songs: "Welcome to the 60s," "Good Morning Baltimore," and "I Can Hear the Bells."
The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Vocal range: Baritone/Bari-Tenor. G3-A5. Singing style: strong pop singer with a high Bari-Tenor and strong falsetto. Important songs: “Ladies’ Choice” and “It Takes Two.”
Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Vocal range: Belting Mezzo-Soprano. A3-G5. Singing style: strong, high-belting contemporary theater/Pop voice with a quirky flare and good comedic timing. Important songs: “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now.”
Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano. A3-F5. Singing style: Belting contemporary theater/Pop voice, occasionally nasal/shrill tone. Important songs: “Cooties” and “New Girl in Town.”
Tracy's classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. He is cocky but surprisingly lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny. Vocal range: Belting Tenor. F3-D5. Singing style: High and Belting, with a bright and spirited tone. Important songs: “Run and Tell That.”
Seaweed's little sister. Spunky, tough, streetwise, outgoing, and older than her years. Vocal range: Belting Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano. Singing style: strong, high belting with a childlike quality. Important songs: “Run and Tell That.”
4-8 individuals to be featured in ensemble numbers. Will also be prioritized for smaller speaking roles over other ensemble members. Strong singing ability not necessary.
