Annual Festival of One Acts

Albany, NY, United States
ID: 572232Exp: 8/5/2024
Description:

Auditions for Confetti Fest XX, the twentieth iteration of annual festival of locally written one acts. Looking for actors ages 17+. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: “Unlocking the Past”: As stipulated in their grandmother’s will, estranged siblings Carl and Susan must meet with Grandma’s lawyer together in order to receive their inheritance. The forced confrontation brings up past hurts, shared memories, and a future neither of them had anticipated. Turns out that old keys can open more than the doors to Grandma’s old house. “Can’t Play Dead”: This show takes place in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. The zombies have won. More frightening than that: they know they’ve won. Join zombie pundit Guptill Franklinson and their panel of experts, including Reverend J.D. Hogswater; Social Media Influencer/Secretary of Education Libby Cornetto; Fairfax University Professor of Human Studies, Dr. Elias Framingham; and Glen Jenkins, a human, as they answer the biggest hot button issue of the day, “Human Beings: Harmless Curiosity or Existential Threat?” “God Walks Into a Bar”: God, if you choose to believe it is God and not a delusional bum named Desmond, comes by earth for the first time in 30,000 years and has a conversation with Jon and Molly, two denizens of a neighborhood bar. The play is a comedy but tackles the subject of bigotry within religion. “A Game of Moans”: After a strange turn of events, a couple retreats to a sleazy motel to watch something very special. Along the way, friendships, trust, and the location of batteries are questioned. Additional info: Auditions will consist of monologues and cold readings from the scripts. Actors are asked to prepare a 1 minute monologue of their choice. Performances will be October 4-6 and 10-13 . Performances will be at 7:30 on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays, with 2:00 Sunday matinees. Mandatory tech week is September 28 – October 3. Company recognizes that the second Saturday performance coincides with Yom Kippur. Directors are mindful of the observances of this day and welcome performers of all faiths to audition. If you are interested, please apply.

14 roles

CarlMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Has spent the last 5 years caring for the grandmother who essentially raised him and his sister Susan. He and Susan had a falling out over their abusive father’s will - Carl inherited everything and Susan received nothing. They haven’t spoken since.

Guptill FranklinsonMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Moderator of This is America: Live and Uncensored. Like most of their fellow panelists, Guptill is a zombie and as such, they are a member of this world’s privileged class. Guptill has refined fake outrage to an artform and has chosen to weaponize this talent against human beings.

Rev. J.D. HogswaterMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Also a zombie. In their youth, J.D. was an offensive tackle for an NFC East team, but found Zombie Jesus after a hamstring injury sent them into early retirement. Now a person of the cloth, J.D. treats the human members of their flock with the same nuance and sensitivity that they used to reserve for dawdling placekickers. However, they’d be the first one to tell you: they’re not the one who hates humans, God is.

Libby CornettoMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

A zombie influencer who has risen to the top of political power and prestige in America through the potent cocktail of fear-mongering, illegal surveillance, and original-recipe fascism. Whenever Libby posts about human beings trying to live their lives in public, bomb threats inevitably follow. Clearly someone who got into the game by wildly overestimating their own intelligence and charm, they’re happy to keep on playing using the only card they have left: blind, stupid hatred.

Dr. FraminghamMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

A tenured professor at Fairfax University. Dr. F is a zombie who loves their brains. Just ask them, they’ll tell ya.

GlenMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The long-suffering human correspondent of the show, Glen is a writer for the New York Times Opinion section. If you’ve ever read a headline that began with “[Fill in the meagerest gesture of human kindness here] would have a chilling effect on [Fill in a thing primarily enjoyed by the rich and/or privileged here],” it was probably written by someone like Glen. Their name is not a reference to the Walking Dead or anything, it’s just a dull, soggy-sounding name that seemed appropriate.

Caller #1Male17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Person who wheels out brain: The Caller’s name is Bobby, a zombie who works at an airforce base. They resent the human soldiers they have to serve with. They are an offstage voice. The actor for CALLER #1 may also play the person who wheels out the brain for GLEN to eat. Are they a human?? Are they a zombie?? I will let the make-up budget and the capricious whims of the director decide.

Eryn/Caller#2Male17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

They have seen and felt the bigotry that preceded the zombies, and knows it to only be the latest strain of the same disease. Caller #2 is a zombie parent who is worried that their kids might have to go to school with humans. They are an Offstage voice.

The BumMale17-18 y.o.African-American

JonMale17-18 y.o.White / Caucasian

MollyMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

JennaFemale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Bill's wife. Kind, but high strung. Sassy, but not mean about it. Neat and proper, who really appreciates the finer things in life. Can be easily stressed and grossed out.

BillMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The comic husband to Jenna. Anxious but enthusiastic. Always convinced his plans will work out. Ever the optimist, and sticks to his principles. This role will require an actor with excellent comedic skills.

DanMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

Age or body type is not a concern. English is not his first language. Dan has an accent (any) and miles of self confidence. His "take charge" attitude and sexy charm should be easily seen with his smoldering look and strong body language. He is sexy and he knows it. Actor will have to be shirtless for the role.
