18 roles
Soprano, British accent. Raised mainly by servants in British Colonial India, Mary lacks refinement and social grace. She has not yet learned to be a refined, British young lady and instead has been reared as a spoiled and entitled child. When her parents die of cholera, Mary is brought to her uncle’s home in England.
Treble/Boy Soprano, British accent. Colin is Lily and Archibald’s son. He is bedridden, for fear that a “lump” in his back will soon grow into a hunchback like his father’s. Colin is quite certain that he will die very soon. If he ever leaves his bed (which is rare), Colin must be pushed in a wheelchair.
Tenor, Yorkshire accent. Dickon is Martha’s younger brother and assists Ben with the caretaking of the grounds. He grew up on the Misselthwaite grounds, so he’s intimately connected to the land. Dickon has quite the green thumb, as well as a special touch with the animals. It even seems, sometimes, like Dickon can speak with them.
Mezzo-Soprano, Yorkshire accent. Martha is a faithful housekeeper at Misselthwaite Manor and becomes Mary’s main caretaker when she arrives. Martha is charming and frank and knows how to speak to Mary, who can be a bit of a tough nut to crack. She refuses to kowtow to the demands of either Mary or Colin, who respect Martha’s commands.
Spoken, a British accent. The patient and professional headmistress of a boarding school for girls, that specializes in handling girls with tempers. Little Mary Lennox, however, tests this hardened professional to her limits, and Mrs. Winthrop leaves, informing Mary’s wealthy uncle, Archbald, that she cannot take Mary because the girl has “a medical problem.”
Spoken, with a British accent. The Cravens’ longtime housekeeper. She is rigid, professional, and outwardly cold. She has no patience for Mary’s temper and poor humor, but she is incredibly good at her job. Archibald depends greatly on her, for logistical and emotional support.
Soprano, Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. British accent. Rose is Captain Lennox’s wife and Mary’s mother. She is also Lily’s sister. Rose cannot understand how Lily could love a man as closed-off and cold as Archibald appears to be. The two sisters, who care about each other deeply, fight bitterly over Lily’s match
Tenor Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. British accent. Rose’s husband and Mary’s father. He is very distant from his daughter, Mary, in her childhood, preoccupying himself with matters that he finds unsuitable for children and leaving his daughter to be cared for almost exclusively by servants. He is a brave, respectable British captain until his life is taken in the cholera outbreak.
Tenor A self-professed “older man,” Ben is the caretaker of the grounds, and has secretly been maintaining Lily’s garden, though it has been locked shut following Lily’s death. Witty Ben is grizzled, old, and wise, and safely guards many secrets about the garden. Although he follows the dictates of Archibald to keep the garden closed and barred, he reveals its existence and the story behind it to Mary.
Soprano Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. British accent. A wealthy, somewhat snooty friend of Rose; judgmental of the Indian servants.
Tenor Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. An officer in Captain Lennox's unit. Along with Lieutenant Shaw, he discovers Mary, alone, after the cholera outbreak kills the rest of her family and their servants. He is brave, kind, and compassionate.
Baritone Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. An officer in Captain Lennox's unit. Along with Lieutenant Wright, he discovers Mary, alone, after the cholera outbreak kills the rest of her family and their servants. He is brave, kind, and compassionate.
Tenor Member of the ensemble of Dreamers. A Major in the British Army. He helps Mary onto the train which takes her to Misselthwaite Manor. He is brave, kind, and compassionate.
