6 roles

CHIP TOLENTINOMale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Tenor (C3-B4)– Putnam’s reigning spelling champion, he returns to defend his title, and expects things to come easily to him. An athletic, social, boy scout, he is growing up and experiencing changes a little faster than he’d like.

LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUBENNIEREMale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Mezzo/Alto (G3-F5)] – Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current politics and her mature worldviews. She has two overbearing fathers who have turned her neurotic and self-conscious. She speaks with a lisp, though has a real confidence about her at times. Having drilled words for hours a day, she is aware of everything that passes in the room.

LEAF CONEYBEARMale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Baritone/Tenor (A2-A4)] The second alternate in his district’s bee, he never expected to be competing here. He finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing, like showing off his homemade clothing. He is home-schooled with his many siblings, the children of former hippies. He’s strange but very sweet, loving and kindhearted but distracted. He may have severe Attention Deficit Disorder, but delights in his own wandering focus.

WILLIAM BARFEEMale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Tenor (C3-Bb4)] – A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated due to an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. He has a whole host of health problems and even more to prove. Loud and combative as a defensive mechanism, he has become a bit of a bully to avoid being picked on. His famous “Magic Foot” method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he has no interest in making friends at the bee, but is pleasantly surprised when he does.

MARCY PARKFemale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Mezzo (A3-F5),] – Marcy is the most feared and practiced competitor in the bee. She speaks six languages, and is a young lady of many talents. She is incredibly intense. She comes from a family where excellence is expected and so simply produced. She is the ultimate over-achiever, and knows that is the only option.

OLIVE OSTROVSKYFemale14-18 y.o.All ethnicities

[Mezzo/Soprano (A3-G5)] – A newcomer to competitive spelling, Olive is a word lover with a fairly quiet life. An only child with often-absent parents, she spends most of her time alone with her dictionary. She finds the words so comforting, and is fascinated by the vastness of the world contained within it. She starts enormously shy, and slowly blossoms. Should have a strong high belt.
