About the project: Everyone's favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning, smash hit film. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears. "Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy-tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek. Shrek presents a treasure trove of creative opportunities, including costumes, sets, puppets (there is a fire-breathing dragon after all), and more! Irreverently fun for the whole family, Shrek proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre. Shrek The Musical turns the traditional fairy tale upside-down with dazzling puppetry, high-energy dance numbers, sidesplitting jokes, and over-the-top characters. Rehearsals: early August 6 Performances Dates: Friday, October 20 @8:00pm Saturday, October 21 @8:00pm Sunday, October 22 @3:00pm Friday, October 27 @8:00pm Saturday, October 28 @8:00pm Sunday, October 29 @3:00pm Audition Requirements: General: Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the paperwork. Please bring a complete list of conflicts between July 24th and October 30th. Please bring a resume and headshot if you have them. Vocal: Please prepare 32 bars, which should be around 1:15–1:30 seconds (two minutes is maximum) of a musical theater song. Please bring sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist, who will be provided. No recorded tracks or cappella auditions are allowed. Please NO Musical selections from Shrek the Musical. Dance: Please come prepared to move with appropriate shoes. There will be a short dance routine to learn. You must be available for all performances. All roles are open to audition. All auditionees must bring sheet music with them and be prepared to sing 32 bars, but no more of a fully memorized musical theater song that showcases your vocal range. Please NO Musical selections from Shrek the Musical. An accompanist will be provided. A cappella singing, instrumentals on CD, Tape, iPod, smartphone, MP3 Player, or digital recorder will not be allowed. Auditionees will be asked to learn a short dance/movement combination taught at the audition so wear comfortable clothing conducive to movement and if you are called back you will be asked to read from the script and sing selections from the show. The beautiful princess of Far Far Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Lord Farquaad's guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of a princess to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel. Age: 30 to 45 Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: B2
A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter. Age: 25 to 45 Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: F3
The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying. Age: 20 to 40 Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: E3
A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. Gingy can be played as a puppet who is operated and voiced by the actress appearing as Russian accented ‘ballerina’ type, Sugar Plum Fairy or as an actress in a gingerbread cookie costume. He doesn't need to be a scary, threatening big-bad-wolf type. At this point, he's a pretty tame wolf who is reduced to wearing Little Red Ridinghood's grandmother's dressing gown.
Pig 1, Pig 2, and Pig 3. The classic three little pigs with a German twist. It isn't necessary that they look identical; focus on finding a fun and dynamic trio.

Classic runt of the litter. She may be bitter about her unfortunate appearance, but she does find camaraderie among her fellow fairy tale outcasts. This is a fun comedic role for a performer.

They are based on characters from the nursery rhyme of the same name. However, they were made popular in Lewis Carroll's famous sequel novel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.
An egg. Sings a big riffing ‘Freak Flag’.
She mostly appears as a gag character, meant to be played for laughs. Primarily her voice helps define her only trait as being mildly irritating. However, she later sings in 'Freak Flag' as part of the ensemble. The elf reveals that she practices Scientology.
