About the project: "Dear William," a feature film adaptation of David Magee's best-selling memoir that chronicles his family's devastating encounter with addiction, the loss of one son, and the recovery of another. For Magee, the film is about much more than a movie. It's really about the breaking and remaking of an American family. The film is based on Magee's memoir, "Dear William: A Father's Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love and Loss," which tells the story of the Magee family's struggle as addiction tightened its grip on their lives. What emerged from that experience was a realization that recovery often begins not with policy prescriptions or government programs but with human connection. The Dear William Project aims to use storytelling, school programs, and community engagement to help families navigate addiction, recovery, and mental health challenges.
