3 roles
A smaller-framed young woman who must project a child-like yet deeply devious and malicious quality. She has an unsettling, almost playful menace — the kind of quiet, calculating expression that can shift from wide-eyed innocence to something cold and predatory in an instant. Think of a girl who still carries youthful energy but whose eyes and subtle smirks reveal something dangerous underneath. Must be comfortable with physical work (falling, being carried, floating/wire work if required).
The older son of the Old Woman. He should feel grounded, practical, and slightly protective — the kind of rural young man who is cautious about strangers and quick to worry about consequences (especially when it comes to other people’s livestock). He needs a natural, understated presence that can shift into genuine shock and quiet dread. A grounded, believable “village boy” energy rather than anything overly polished or theatrical.
The younger son. He should feel open, curious, and still very much a child — the kind of kid who asks simple questions and becomes emotionally overwhelmed when something goes wrong. Must be able to play sincere concern and raw distress in a natural, non-precocious way. Warm, boyish energy that contrasts with the darker tone of the story.
