About the project: Caesar has returned to Rome in triumph after defeating the forces of Pompey. But a group of senators, alarmed by his growing power and fearful that his ambition will destroy the Republic, begins plotting his assassination. To strengthen their cause, they persuade Brutus—a trusted friend of Caesar and a man renowned for his honor—that Rome’s future depends upon joining the conspiracy against the man he calls friend. One of Shakespeare’s greatest political dramas, Julius Caesar explores loyalty, ambition, betrayal, honor, and the terrible consequences of political violence. Filled with unforgettable speeches, tense conspiracies, public spectacle, and gripping battles, the play remains as timely today as it was more than four hundred years ago. Additional info: Prepare ONE of the following: A dramatic monologue from one of Shakespeare’s tragedies (excluding Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet) A dramatic monologue from one of Shakespeare’s history plays One of Shakespeare’s sonnets Choose material with a strong theatrical range and emotional depth. Memorization is REQUIRED. Monologues will be evaluated on: Volume and projection Clarity of diction Depth of emotional expression Clarity of intention Physical commitment and transformation Auditionees should bring their calendars. All conflicts must be listed at auditions. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS Actors are permitted a maximum of four conflicts. Attendance at all technical rehearsals is mandatory. Attendance at all performances is mandatory. STRIKE following the final performance is mandatory. REHEARSAL SCHEDULE Orientation & First Rehearsal Wednesday, August 26 Orientation begins at 6:30 PM and is required for all first-time participants. Rehearsal will follow. Rehearsals continue through Thursday, October 22. Rehearsals are generally held on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Weekday rehearsals typically run 7:00–9:00 PM during the early weeks. As opening approaches, rehearsals shift to 6:00–9:00 PM. Sunday rehearsals begin at 6:00 PM and move to 5:00 PM closer to opening. There will be no rehearsals on September 6 or 7 in observance of Labor Day. There will also be no rehearsals from October 2–10. Rehearsals resume Sunday, October 11. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided at auditions.
