About the project: This thrilling drama about the Puritan purge of “witches” in old Salem, MA – commonly known as “The Salem Witch Trials” – is both a gripping historical play and a parable for modern-day society. As the story unfolds, audience members experience how small lies can build and build, eventually whipping a whole town into a frenzy. Set in a small, rural, tight-knit community, personal grievances collide with lust and superstition, fueling widespread religious fervor and hysteria. Arthur Miller’s timeless work, written during the height of McCarthyism, attacks the evils of mindless persecutions, based on lies, and the horrifying power of false accusations. Additional info: Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, 9/8, and will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings until tech week. Shows are scheduled for: The evening of Thursday, November 19th The evening of Friday, November 20th The evening of Saturday, November 21st, and The afternoon of Sunday, November 22nd. (preferably with the ability to play at the younger end) The daughter of Reverend Samuel Parris and cousin to Abigail Williams. Betty falls into a strange stupor after her father catches her and the other girls in the town dancing in the forest with Tituba.
Susanna is nervous and hasty, often playing – or seeming – younger and/or more immature than Abigail. She works for Dr. Griggs and participates in the ritual in the woods with Tituba. This role requires physicality.
Mercy is a servant of Ann and Thomas Putnam. She is sly and merciless and enjoys using her emotions as leverage. She is Abigail’s closest friend and “right-hand,” sticking with her until the end. This role requires physicality.
A timid servant in the household of John and Elizabeth Proctor, and a member of Abigail’s group of girls. Mary seems to be the only girl with a conscience, trying – unsuccessfully – to expose the hoax. Unfortunately, she is easily influenced by those around her and is thwarted by Abigail and the other girls. In order to save herself from their accusations of witchcraft, Mary ultimately recants her confession and turns on John Proctor. This role requires physicality.
