About the play: Ali is away from her family, trying to make peace with her past, while Martin struggles to find new meaning in his life back home. Their daughter, Emerson, competes in her first spelling bee, determined to find her own voice against thunderous expectations. Definition is a heartfelt journey of how we redefine ourselves when our dreams and expectations are compromised by life's givings. Unfolding from a chance encounter at a library in 1999, this family's present-day realities, and once-imagined futures seek new meaning. Through laughter, memory and a little bit of spice (…Girls), this single day at the end of the world will unravel the origins and transform the future of their family as they know it. Rate: Union (Non-Union may also apply). AGREEMENT: CTA. Additional information: FIRST REHEARSAL: March 23, 2027. Rehearsals will be from Tuesday-Sunday from approximately 10:00am-6:00pm. Your child will not be asked to be at rehearsal all day, every day, but will likely have to miss some school. TECH WEEK BEGINS: April 20, 2027. INVITED DRESS: April 25, 2027. FIRST PREVIEW: April 27, 2027. OPENING: May 5, 2027. CLOSING: May 30, 2027. PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: Tuesday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm, some Wednesdays at 1:00pm. Emerson (9) is a perceptive, curious, and intelligent girl balancing the expectations of her parents. In present day, she is an avid spelling bee competitor and is fascinated with words, people, and how they are defined. She loves her parents, but she isn't afraid to speak her mind. She is discovering her voice. Emerson is a significant role in the play and the actor cast in the role will be required to memorize a large amount of text.
