About the project: This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Additional info: Dance/Movement Call will be from 1pm-3pm on Sunday, May 31st. Callbacks, if needed, will be on Sunday, May 31st starting at 4pm. lease prepare 16 - 32 bars (roughly 1 minute) of an audition song (with accompaniment track) that best showcases your vocal skills. Vocal range: C3 - B4 (Octave switching as needed). The messenger of the gods and protector of travellers, Hermes narrates our story. They walk the line between the world of the audience and the realm of the gods.
Vocal range: D3 - C5. A songwriter, artist, and dreamer. Orpheus is the son of a Muse whose very existence is driven by music and art. He is bold yet naive, daring to challenge the gods themselves for the sake of love. Orpheus will be playing guitar on stage throughout the show. If you are called back for Orpheus, you may be asked to play the guitar. A guitar will be available on site for those who need it.
Vocal range: F#3 - D5. Defined by hardship, driven to survive. Eurydice is a realist trying to make her way in a cold, harsh world. She is confident, judgemental, and clever; all she needs is hope.
Vocal range: F2 - C#4. Practical, inventive, and formidable. Hades is the god of wealth and death who rules the underworld through fear and punishment. Once drawn to beauty and life, Hades has lost sight of who he was, falling into despair and anger and dragging the souls of the dead along with him.
Vocal range: F3 - C5. Full of life, surrounded by beauty. Where Persephone walks, spring blossoms. She is joyful, exciting, and searching for a hope she lost long ago. What once brought her joy has become an escape from her reality.
Vocal ranges: E3 - Eb5. They lend commentary and insight on the story unfolding and the thoughts, insecurities, and doubts of other characters. They are self-confident and poised, often taunting in their knowledge of what happens next. They act as an outward expression of the character’s interior conflicts as events unfold.
All vocal ranges. The everyman, the travellers, the condemned. You and I. The workers weave the tapestry of this story, sometimes as a Greek chorus, sometimes as individuals. While the Fates narrate thoughts and emotions of our characters, the workers are the machinery that drive the story forward.
