Seeking Actors for Production of "This Is a Play About God"
Auditions now open for "This Is a Play About God". Details below! ONLY MD, VA, AND LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: Synopsis: Set entirely within the claustrophobic locker room of an elite volleyball summer intensive, THIS IS A PLAY ABOUT GOD is a dark comedy about the high stakes of girlhood in a world where image is everything, especially when D1 scouts could be lurking behind every corner. The team is led by the uncompromising captain Mackenzie, who proselytizes the importance of team alignment; it's in the way you tie your hair ribbon, the color of your pre-wrap, and the manicured symmetry of your Instagram grid. Mackenzie has a perfect boyfriend, a perfect setting arc, and a perfectly hidden history with a girl named Jordan. But when a new player arrives and starts asking questions about the MVP ghost in the trophy case, the perfect team begins to fracture. This funny, high-energy, 90-minute play investigates the pressures we place upon ourselves, the complicated nature of female friendship, and who and how much we will give up to protect the version of ourselves that exists in our heads. 5 roles
The Captain. Scholarship-ready, hollow, and haunted. A setter. She is the embodiment of the brand: bright, athletic, and meticulously curated. She has spent three years perfecting a version of herself that is scholarship-ready, even if it means living inside a hollow shell. She is haunted by a history she refuses to remember. Context: Mackenzie is alone, practicing her post-game face in the mirror.
The Vice-Captain. Metal, spite, and broken by the rules. A middle blocker. She is the most aggressive enforcer of the rules because she is the one most broken by them. She knows where all the bodies are buried because she helped dig the holes. Context: Olive is aggressively taping her shoulder, speaking to a Newbie who is moving too slowly and clearly forgetting she has an audience.
The Chaos Agent. Fast, loud, and terrified of the silence that comes when the cheering stops. An outside hitter. She uses humor and a drunk-adjacent (sometimes just drunk) persona as a preemptive strike against her own perceived mediocrity. Context: Hailey is trying to perform fun while hiding her duffel bag.
The Disciple. Helpful, invisible, and anxious about omens. A right-side hitter. She is the “good girl” who survives by being helpful and invisible. She is the most susceptible to the rituals and the most anxious about the omens. She is a reliable witness who is tired of watching. Context: Fern is meticulously cleaning a locker, talking to herself.
The Newbie. The intruder who sees the ghosts. A libero. She hasn't learned the lore and liturgy of the locker room yet, which makes her dangerous. She sees the ghosts that everyone else is pretending don't exist. Context: Kayla is talking to a friend from her old school, Nottington, perhaps on FaceTime.
