About the project: On the verge of graduation, Matty, a 17 year old student confronts the fear of showing vulnerability as a man, carrying the grief of a brother he lost for the same reasons. On the night of his high school graduation, Matty is faced with the grief of his older brother Ryan’s death weighing on him in his shift to adulthood. With this straining the relationships around him, Miss Clarke, one of Matty’s teachers offers him support through a difficult time in his life. The film ends not returning to the present for answers. Young Matty is quiet but intensely present. He watches more than he speaks, absorbing details others miss. His emotions are visible in his face: joy, confusion, sadness all arrive without filters. He feels safe expressing affection, especially with his brother, and doesn’t yet understand why feelings should be hidden. There’s an openness to his body language: relaxed shoulders, direct eye contact, no armor. This version of Matty hasn’t learned fear around vulnerability yet.
