"Hans Christian Andersen JR." Show Needs Boys and Girls
Kids ages 8-18 years old are welcome to audition for "Hans Christian Andersen JR." Show. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: "Hans Christian Andersen JR." tells the story of 13-year-old Christian, a boy who struggles with reading and writing but discovers a remarkable gift for storytelling. Narrators Crantz and Guilder guide us through the world and fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen, including "The Little Mermaid," "Thumbelina," and "The Ugly Duckling". A misfit in a new city, Christian escapes his troubles through his stories. When his storytelling catches the attention of his teacher and even royalty, Christian realizes he has a special gift to share with the world. Additional info: Students need to prepare a 30-60 second selection of a song, preferably musical theatre, to perform in front of our audition panel. Students will also do a simple movement audition with our choreographer. Please come dressed in comfortable clothes to move in, and wear shoes that you can dance in. Do not wear open-toe shoes, Crocs, or slippers. Performance Dates: (two weekends) Thursday-Saturday, April 9-18, with two shows on Saturday Rehearsals: evenings Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, some Saturday mornings except Tech Week. Not every student will be called for all rehearsals. A full schedule will be provided shortly after casting, taking known conflicts into consideration. TECH WEEK Rehearsals cannot be missed for any reason. Directors will be following the Anderson School District 5 and Anderson Christian School calendars as best as they can. Directors will be mindful not to schedule events and activities on Wednesday nights (with the exception of Tech week) or on Sundays. They encourage students to be involved in their local churches and youth groups. Note that a participation fee will be involved. If interested, please apply.

The titular Hans Christian Andersen, is a dynamic storyteller who receives the opportunity of a lifetime: a spot in the Royal Academy. Though Christian’s talent is remarkable, he struggles to fit in at the Academy and misses home. He is sweet and slightly awkward but finds a friend in fellow misfit Princess Caroline. A princess in every meaning of the word. Cherished by her mother and the kingdom, she strives for perfection in every area of her life. Though she can come off as haughty and a bit spoiled, her behavior is rooted in the pressure she feels to meet everyone’s expectations of being the perfect princess. A complex character for a mature and thoughtful performer. Though she may seem like the antagonist at the top of the show, she recognizes Christian’s remarkable talent and sees a bit of her own story in Christian’s situation. Vocal range top: D#5 Vocal range bottom: B3

An eclectic sausage seller with a big personality who befriends Christian in the marketplace. Though she’s a bit of a gossip, Mrs. Madsen is all too willing to gather a crowd for Christian’s stories – especially if it means she can sell more sausages. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: A3
