About the project: The Miracle Worker dramatizes the true story of Helen Keller, a girl from Alabama who was blind and deaf, and Anne Sullivan, the woman who taught her language. It is a love letter to the teachers who never give up, even when their students seem beyond reach. Language, whether it is spoken, written, or signed, is depicted as the key to unlocking a world of possibilities for anyone, regardless of whether they have a disability. Though the Keller family and Annie Sullivan are in constant conflict at the beginning of the play, they learn a great deal from each other by the end. The Kellers learn that Helen is capable of more than they ever dared to imagine. And Anne Sullivan, or Annie, in the midst of fighting for Helen to have a better life, learns to love again. Rate: As this is a community theater production, there is no pay. Additional info: What: Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors are only required to come to one night of auditions, but are welcome to come to both if available. Headshot and resume are recommended, but not required. Rehearsals: Monday–Thursdays (7:00–10:00 PM) and select Saturdays *Children (with the exception of Helen) will not be called to every rehearsal. They will be released early from rehearsals (excluding tech week, which they will be expected to attend the entire duration of). Deaf-blind child pitied and spoiled by her family until she is nearly uncontrollable. Annie Sullivan is hired to be Helen’s teacher, to save the child from committal to an asylum.

Girl students ages 8 to 17, at the Perkins Institution for the Blind. They serve as a composite character, speaking with one voice. Named among them are Beatrice, Alice, and Laura. As goodbye gifts for Annie Sullivan, they present her with smoked glasses for her sensitive eyes and an elegant doll to give Helen Keller. They wish their adored Annie well but also regret that she is leaving them.
