Romeo is the passionate, impulsive, and romantic son of the Montague family. He is full of youthful energy, sincerity, and emotional intensity. Romeo falls deeply and quickly in love, first with the idea of love itself, and then with Juliet, with whom he shares an instant and powerful connection. The actor should be able to portray both playful humor and heart-wrenching vulnerability, moving convincingly between lighthearted banter with friends and the depth of true, tragic love.
The only daughter of the Capulet family. Juliet is intelligent, strong-willed, and sincere, with a quick wit and a depth of feeling beyond her years. She transitions over the course of the play from innocence and obedience to fierce independence and determination. The actor must balance Juliet’s youthful idealism with her courage and resolve in choosing love and loyalty to Romeo over family and tradition.
Romeo’s witty, charismatic, and irreverent best friend. Mercutio is full of energy, clever wordplay, and wild humor, often stealing attention with his larger-than-life presence. Beneath their sharp wit lies deep loyalty and quick temper. The actor should embody charm, confidence, and unpredictability, while also carrying the intensity and gravity of Mercutio’s pivotal fate.
Romeo’s cousin and friend, known for being level-headed, peace-seeking, and loyal. Benvolio serves as a steadying presence among the more volatile characters, but still has the vitality of youth. The actor should be able to play both sincerity and warmth, with the ability to navigate moments of humor as well as tragedy.
Juliet’s hot-blooded cousin, fiercely loyal to the Capulet family and consumed by pride and honor. Tybalt’s fiery temper and aggression contrast sharply with Romeo’s romantic nature. The actor should bring intensity, physicality, and a strong stage presence, embodying both the menace of a skilled fighter and the passion of a young person quick to anger.
A nobleman favored by the Capulets as Juliet’s suitor. Paris is polite, well-meaning, and honorable, though more aligned with family duty than passionate love. The actor should portray charm and earnestness, as well as dignified grief.
Capulet servants who open the play with wit and bravado. They are lively, comedic, and eager to prove themselves in the feud. Strong comic timing and physicality are key.
A Montague servant who participates in the early street fight. A small but spirited role.
