8 roles

The Narrator - El GalloBoth genders13-18 y.o.All ethnicities

(High Baritone). As the narrator of the piece, he is the liaison between the audience and the action onstage. He is warm, cordial, and inviting to the audience, yet with darker, seductive moments. His attitude toward the rest of the cast reveals a decidedly mysterious side. Above all he is grand and must command attention.

The Girl – LouisaFemale13-18 y.o.All ethnicities

(Legit Soprano). As a young lover, she is in love with the idea of love and indeed everything remotely romantic. Her dreams are more fanciful than those of Matt. Because of her particular vision of romance, she deals with the world on a particularly naive level. She is the daughter of Bellamy.

The Boy – MattMale13-18 y.o.All ethnicities

(High Baritone). Our second young lover, he lacks experience in the world so, while not stupid, he is naive and perhaps even foolish at times. His image of a young man in love is one of a gallant protector, meaning that he approaches some decisions with a falsified bravery that is little more than bravado. He is the son of Hucklebee.

BellamyMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

The Parents (Baritone/Mezzo). The parents of Luisa and Matt, this blustery and boisterous duo have a strong team connection and great comedic timing. While always arguing and bickering (when not tending their respective gardens), the pair are secretly plotting together for the marriage of their children.

The Old Actor – HenryMale17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

(Baritone). This pair of aging comic actors are hired by El Gallo to help facilitate the biggest dramatic moments of the show (even though, as performers, their day has long past). Henry can play grand characters and recite Shakespeare, but with very little success these days. Mortimer’s specialty is dying on stage in the manner of great adventures and melodramas. They are entirely theatrical (potentially including English and Cockney accents). Mostly speaking roles – some minor singing.

The MuteBoth genders17-18 y.o.All ethnicities

While mute – as the name implies – this is actually a critically important role. In fact, the actor never leaves the stage! While omnipresent, the character must know when to pull focus and when to fade into the background as necessary. The Mute frequently interacts with the others and is often tasked with “setting the stage”, both literally (moving set and prop pieces) and figuratively (scattering leaves, “blowing” rain and/or snow confetti, tenderly lending a hand, etc.).
