Casting Teen Performers for "Without Rule of Law" Play

About the project: Convinced the world at large can’t be trusted to prioritize the well-being of adolescent girls in the event of a cataclysmic event (or just in general), a determined troupe of preteen “doomers” commit to preparing for survival in the post-collapse society they anticipate inheriting. When Marueen, Jo, Sarah, Vic, and Robbie sneak out at night to investigate an ominous hidden lair in the woods, they believe they have stumbled onto proof of what happened to a mysterious local cult that vanished over a decade ago. As they search for vital clues, examining small bones and dusty cans of food for signs of life, they fight to be understood in a world that seems to reject them. What they discover changes everything - eighth grade will never be the same. Part Judy Blume, part Rambo, this darkly comic coming-of-age story for complicated times is for any young woman who has ever been told that she is “too much,” or that what she fears is illegitimate, or that what she has to say is less important than keeping the peace. Additional info: This will be a small group audition session of approximately 30 minutes. PLEASE PREPARE a short monologue that is under one minute in length. We encourage you to find a piece that is dramatic in nature but can include elements of humour. The audition session will also include reading select scenes from the script with your fellow auditionees and a full-group exercise. No preparation required. Please wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear. Rehearsals for the show will begin in November, and will be 2 times a week increasing in frequency upon approach of performance dates. Please note: due to the use of live and recorded elements in the final performance, there will also be dates embedded in the rehearsal schedule for filming. Dates will be scheduled to accommodate the majority of availability. Performances for WROL (Without Rule of Law) will take place from February 5th to 15th. See the attachment for more information. Resilient. Ferocious. Empathetic. Maureen canpass as “well-adjusted” when she needs to, despite a continuous fire seething within her. She has abundant energy and drive - so much so that it is sometimes beyond her control. She is trying her best to help the people in her life and help them help themselves. She’s got “big sister” energy, despite being one of the youngest in the group.
For Jo, it has always been a fight - nothing comes easily. Her relationships are hard won and her trust not easily earned. She is messy and vital and wild and afraid. Unlike Marueen, she generally cannot pass as well-adjusted (even when she needs to). She struggles to understand what grown-ups expect from her and has become reconciled to probably disappointing them. Under the skin, she is a determined force, a uniquely charismatic leader, and a deeply vulnerable soul.
Without being a bully, Robbie has a voice in any room. While he is not the most popular boy in school, he has never questioned whether or not he belongs. He can casually and easily fit into the system as it exists. He genuinely cares about the well-being of these girls and what happens to them. He is concerned with right and wrong.
Vic is an open book… except for her multitude of secrets. She is at ease with who she is, resistant to reinvention, even though she’s had to move schools a lot. She is perceptive and curious - a born listener, problem-solver, and not-so-secret badass.
Rigorous, thoughtful, obsessive, and intensely imaginative, Sarah has a naturally introverted energy, but glows like a beacon that can be seen for miles when she gets to let others in on the workings of her terrific brain.
