Gabriella Montez is the new student who’s struggling to find her place at East High. She’s a Renaissance woman who doesn’t fully identify with any of the cliques, and so she’s taking her time – and realizing her confidence – along the way. Smart and independent, Gabriella can be shy and vulnerable at times, but comes into her own when she discovers her talent and love for singing.
Troy Bolton, the most popular student at East High, is the star of the basketball team who yearns to be more than what others – especially his dad, Coach Bolton – want him to be. A natural athlete and charming leader, Troy discovers that he loves to sing and dance, but is afraid to admit it to his basketball buddies. Troy experiences a variety of emotions, from sensitive to self-assured, and eventually finds a balance between the two.
Sharpay Evans is the egocentric star of the school musicals and president of East High’s drama club. She is Ryan's older twin (and the alpha dog of the two). Sharpay has never met a mirror she didn't like, and doesn’t know what it’s like to not be the center of a crowd. Sharpay is confident, snarky, and a diva to her core
Ryan Evans is Sharpay’s fraternal twin and, like her, he lives to sing, dance, and get loads of attention. Subordinate to his sister, Ryan generally follows Sharpay’s orders and lets her have the spotlight, but he longs to break free from her shadow and assert himself. Ryan is a “triple threat” – a strong singer, dancer, and actor – and ensures that everything he does is calculated and executed perfectly.
Kelsi Nielsen, the writer-composer of the winter musical, Juliet and Romeo, possesses a shy demeanor, but does not tolerate Sharpay’s self-centered attitude. She is a compassionate underdog with intelligence, and an uncanny ability to think of sarcastic comebacks against Sharpay. Kelsi has one small singing solo in “We’re All In This Together”, but otherwise only sings with the ensemble.
Chad Danforth, one of Troy’s best friends, is a sports fanatic. Focused on winning the basketball championship, Chad slowly begins to understand that there might be more to life than ball. Alongside Troy, Chad is a leader on his own, and has many strong opinions of his own, though he always has the best intentions of his friends at heart.
Troy’s other best buddy, is a basketball player with a sweet side. He has two secrets: a crush on Sharpay and a love for baking! Out of the three friends, Zeke is the most shameless about his love both basketball and baking, and is the most accepting and open-minded of the bunch. Zeke has a significant solo in “Stick to the Status Quo”, as well as some solos in “Counting on You”.
Taylor McKessie, the very put-together president of the Science Club, is super-assertive and very intent on Gabriella joining the Science Decathlon team so they can (finally!) win the competition. Taylor is confident and occasionally pretentious, but like Chad, just wants the best for her friends (and for the Science Decathlon team)
Martha Cox is a proud member of the Science Club, and is brainy with a secret love for dancing – specifically break dancing! She is kind, humorous, and has a big personality. Martha has a significant solo in “Stick to the Status Quo”, as well as some solos in “Counting on You”.
Jack Scott is the school announcer with a larger-than-life personality. He longs to be a DJ, and has a quirky radio personality with a unique sense of style. Must have clear diction and strong comedic timing. This role does not have any solo singing lines.
Ms. Darbus is East High’s eccentric drama teacher. Passionate and disciplined, she never stops trying to enrich the lives of her students through the wonders of live theater. Ms. Darbus lives her entire life theatrically, and has killer comic timing, though she genuinely loves her art and her students. This role does not have any solo singing lines.
Coach Bolton, the stern basketball coach and Troy’s sometimes overbearing dad, lost the big game years ago and wants a second chance through his basketball-star son. He is often at odds with Ms. Darbus over after-school practice times, but they find a way to respect each other’s work at the end of the day. This role does not have any solo singing lines.
Ensemble – the students of East High School! All ensemble roles require group singing and dancing. There are several additional featured ensemble roles that require either solo singing or speaking. Featured ensemble roles will be cast after rehearsals begin.
