"Something Rotten" Needs Boys and Girls
"Something Rotten" auditions are open to any high school student currently enrolled at Floyd Central High School. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: In the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz. Additional info: Please prepare: -Up to 16 bars (measures) of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. Bring an accompaniment track to play from a phone or Chromebook, or piano sheet music for an accompanist. -The choreography for the dance will be taught at the dance call. Nigel’s older brother. A struggling playwright who is frustrated with his lack of success. As head of a theatre troupe, he is desperate to outdo Shakespeare and create the next big thing in theater. Ambitious, jealous, determined, but also somewhat clueless. Must be able to tap.
Nick’s younger brother. A talented but more idealistic playwright who is far less concerned with fame and more interested in writing meaningful theater. Innocent, sweet, sincere, and naive. Perhaps a little awkward. Very gullible and can easily be manipulated. He falls in love with Portia and ultimately finds confidence in himself through art and love
The Bard! A Rockstar in the Elizabethan Theatre scene and rival to the Bottom brothers. Self-centered, pretentious, arrogant, charming, flashy, and full of himself with a modern, rock-star swagger. Think Mick Jagger, Prince, Tina Turner, Lenny Kravitz. Must be able to tap.
Nick’s wife. She loves and supports him despite his questionable decision making and lack of success. She dresses up like a man to make ends meet for her family. Strong leader, powerful, persuasive.
A quirky Puritan girl whom Nigel meets on the street. Portia is the only daughter of Brother Jeremiah and the love interest to Nigel Bottom. They fall madly in love with each other over their mutual love for Shakespeare and poetry
A soothsayer who “almost” sees the future correctly. A bit loony. This character predicts that Nick and Nigel will write a musical. Comedic, mysterious, all-knowing, and slightly eccentric. Must be able to tap.
The Puritan father of Portia. He is very strict, shows nothing but disrespect towards everyone, but especially playwrights like Nick and Nigel. A deeply repressed Puritan. He despises playwrights, poets and all things he deems “ungodly.”
An extravagant patron of their theater, a lesser noble.
A narrator for parts of the story and serves as the "guide" for the audience.
A money lender to whom Nick and Nigel are in debt.
