About the project: This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of life. Additional info: Callbacks by invitation only if needed: Saturday, July 19, 2025 - 12 noon - 3 pm 32 bars of an upbeat song from a musical of your choice (not Spelling Bee). Please bring music track as will not be having an accompanist for the initial audition. Make sure your phone is blue tooth compatible or bring a thumb drive. Alto. Celie’s sister, and her rock. Smart, adventurous, driven and a devoted sister, she is torn apart from Celie and goes on to realize her life in Africa. [MISTER] Male. 35s - 45. African American. Celie’s husband and abuser- a troubled man. In love with Shug Avery, his misdeeds in life are eventually redeemed as he transforms throughout the play.

Alto. A sultry juke-joint performer, past her prime, and at death's door. A former lover of Mister and a ‘good-time girl’, she forms a deep friendship bond with Celie who helps her rediscover her desire to love again.
