About the project: This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone. Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Additional info: Rehearsals Start: June 22nd Callbacks – Wednesday, June 11th at 6:30 PM Audition Requirements: Please prepare approximately 16-32 bars of music in the style of contemporary musical theatre or a jazz, folk, or pop/rock song, as well as a 1-minute contemporary monologue for your audition. The directors ask that you not audition with material from Hadestown. Please bring your own instrumental or karaoke track, or sheet music with cuts clearly marked. A pianist and Bluetooth speaker will be provided. Per tracks, the directors recommend downloading or screen recording your music to your device prior to your audition, to avoid any potential wifi connectivity issues. The son of a Muse, Orpheus was abandoned as a child and raised by Hermes. A romantic poet and musician who is working on a masterpiece to bring back spring. Orpheus is kind and naive, and while he means well, he has a tendency to fixate on his music above all else. Vocal Range: D3 - C5, Tenor with strong falsetto
A practical girl who lives a hard life, Eurydice knows how to survive and is reluctant to open herself to others. Always roaming, she finds herself falling for Orpheus in spite of herself. Vocal Range: F#3 - D5, Mezzo-Soprano.
The King of the Underworld, and Persephone's husband. Rich and powerful, he rules over the industrial dystopia of Hadestown, forcing his workers to build a never-ending wall to keep trespassers out and his workers in. Fearful of losing Persephone's love, all of Hades' efforts are to cage her and make her stay with him. Vocal Range: F2 - C#4, Bass.
The Goddess of Spring, an outdoorsy girl married to Hades. She relishes the six months she's allowed to be aboveground and gets increasingly annoyed when her husband comes to bring her home early, since it's putting the seasons out of joint and the workers of Hadestown are suffering. Vocal Range: F3 - C5, Mezzo-Soprano/Alto
The Messenger of the Gods and the play's narrator. He raised Orpheus after he was abandoned by his mother, and conducts the train ferrying souls to Hadestown. Vocal Range: C3 - B4, Tenor/Bass
Three divine sisters who decide the fate of each individual. The Fates sing in the back of everyone's minds, pushing the story to where it needs to go while commenting on the characters' choices. Vocal Range: E3 - D5 (Fate 1, up to Eb5) Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto
The citizens and workers of Hadestown, who start out as bar patrons up top. They were lured to Hadestown with the false promise of prosperous jobs and security, only to find themselves in low-paying menial labor building Hades' never-ending wall. Vocal Range: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass
