STUDENT 1 MALIK “MJ” JORDANMale14-16 y.o.African-American

MJ is the class clown, always cracking jokes to hide his pain. His older brother was recently incarcerated after getting caught up in gang activity. Their mom works two jobs, and MJ often walks his little sister to school. He wants to be a photographer, but nobody’s ever taken him seriously. Personality: Quick-witted, defensive, curious but guarded. Pretends not to care but listens more than he lets on. Look: Casual public school wear.

STUDENT 2: TYSON BOOKERMale14-16 y.o.African-American

Background: A quiet leader in his grade. Tyson’s dad passed two years ago from cancer, and he’s been helping care for his grandmother while his mom works night shifts. He writes rhymes in secret but doesn’t perform. He’s seen a lot for his age. Personality: Reserved, reflective, observant. Speaks only when he means it. When he does, people listen.

STUDENT 3: BRIYAH SPENCERFemale15-17 y.o.African-American

Background: Honor student and junior debate champion. Briyah is outspoken about injustice and not afraid to challenge authority—even respectfully. Her dad’s a community journalist. She dreams of becoming a civil rights attorney. Idolizes Angela Davis. Personality: Direct, confident, passionate. Always has a hand raised, always speaks with purpose.
