About the project: Carnelle, an orphaned woman in her 20s with a turbulent past, enters a beauty pageant in the rural town of Brookhaven, MS to show her hometown that she is the elegant beauty she so desperately wants to be in their eyes. (Lead Character) Desperately wants to be “Miss Firecracker” – the towns Beauty Queen. She has a reputation of being a wild child/promiscuous as a teenager, and wants to change her image. She is spunky, energetic, and compulsive. She NEEDS attention and validation of others. The character is quirky, and “comical” in her own way. Actress needs to be comfortable being silly (will do a short ‘bad” dance to begin the show which sets her character.
(Lead Character) Was “Miss Firecracker” when she was younger and is known as the towns ‘beauty.’ The type of woman who dresses beautifully, has perfect makeup and hair, polished nails, etc. She is very “southern” in her manner and loves attention. Proud. She is also very put together, Can say one thing to a person, while her body language tells a different story
Lead Character. She is frumpy, wears BIG glasses, is a seamstress by profession. She Is comfortable as herself and enjoys watching others. She is very curious. She is also looking for romance and becomes smitten with Delmount.
Lead Character Elaine is his sister, and Carnell is his cousin. She is not impressed with his sister. He likes women and is interested in Popeye. He is defiaant but has a softer side.
Supporting Character. He used to date CARNELLE and is still interested in her. He is flirty but in poor health – coughs a lot). He is a gentleman.
Supporting Character. Actress must be comfortable looking unattractive on stage – she is bitter about her looks so she compares herself to Carnelle, Elaine, and Popeye. He is “Southern sarcastic” – “Bless your heart!” She is interested in Delmont, but he is not interested in her.
