(Baritone/Tenor: A2-A4) Charming and ambitious, Monty is a penniless young man who discovers he is ninth in line to inherit the D’Ysquith family fortune. He quickly decides to eliminate the other heirs to claim the Earldom of Highhurst. Monty has a mix of charisma, cunning, and a capacity for dark humor, but his ambition often masks a more vulnerable side. Needs excellent comedic timing and the ability to carry both the romance and the darker aspects of the story.
(Mezzo Soprano: Gb3-D5) Beautiful, vain, and self-centered, Sibella is Monty’s longtime love interest. She enjoys Monty’s affection but marries for money, showing her practical nature. She is witty, flirtatious, and knows how to manipulate situations to her advantage. Needs a strong presence with a powerful voice capable of shifting between charm and selfishness.
(Soprano: C4-high sustained C#6) Monty’s cousin and later his love interest, Phoebe is sweet, sincere, and innocent. Unlike Sibella, Phoebe is genuinely in love with Monty, and her purity provides a foil to the more cynical characters. Needs a graceful and warm presence, with a clear, light vocal quality to contrast with Sibella’s stronger sound.
The D’Ysquith Family (Baritone/Bass) The current Earl, pompous and full of self-importance.
The D’Ysquith Family (Baritone/Bass) An eccentric do-gooder with an inflated sense of charity.
The D’Ysquith Family (Baritone/Bass) Monty’s cousin, an effeminate and whimsical beekeeper. The actor must have great versatility and comic timing, with the ability to create clear, memorable distinctions between the characters.
(Contralto) A mysterious woman who informs Monty of his royal lineage. Miss Shingle is clever, humorous, and has a mischievous air about her. She plays a key role in setting Monty on his journey and seems to delight in the chaos it causes. Needs a strong character actor with a flair for dry humor and wit. The actor playing this role may also be in the ensemble depending on audition turnout and availability. Actors only interested in this role do not need to prepare a song.
