About the project: Hairspray is a high-energy Broadway musical set in 1960s Baltimore, following the story of Tracy Turnblad, a spirited teenager with big hair and even bigger dreams. Tracy's life takes an exciting turn when she lands a spot on the popular Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. As she dances her way to fame, Tracy uses her newfound platform to advocate for racial integration on the show, challenging societal norms and prejudice. With the help of her eccentric yet loving mother, Edna, her friends, Penny and Seaweed, her crush, Link, and a cast of diverse characters, Tracy proves that change is possible when everyone comes together. Hairspray is a joyful celebration of individuality and standing up for what's right, packed with catchy songs, dazzling choreography, and a heartfelt message about acceptance and equality. Rate: All show positions are paid. Additional info: For consideration, please prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. Contemporary musical theatre pieces are preferred, and singing from the show is allowed and even encouraged. A pianist will be available at auditions. You will only have a minute to talk with the pianist about your tempo and cut. The sheet music must be clean, legible, and with a clearly marked cut for the pianist. Sheet music should be in a three-ring binder to ensure smooth page turns. You must have your song memorized at auditions. Vocal Range: Tenor, G3–A5 Description: A charming and good-looking teen heartthrob on the Corny Collins Show. Link is initially superficial but becomes more genuine as he stands by Tracy's side. Requires strong singing and dancing skills.
Vocal Range: Tenor, G3–D5 Description: A talented dancer and son of Motormouth Maybelle. Seaweed is cool, confident, and compassionate, playing a key role in encouraging integration. Must be an excellent dancer.
