(Mezzo Soprano, Bb3-D5) – the play’s protagonist, is shipwrecked in Illyria and disguises herself as a man, "Cesario," to serve Duke Orsino. She falls in love with Orsino while Olivia falls for Cesario, trapping Viola in her disguise, unable to reveal her true feelings to either.
Viola’s twin brother is separated from her during a shipwreck and rescued by Antonio. After three months, he heads to Orsino’s court in Illyria. There, he is mistaken for Cesario (Viola in disguise) by several characters, and Olivia is thrilled when he appears to agree to marry her.
(Mezzo Soprano, Ab3-C5) – a wealthy woman of high status, mourns her father and brother. She manages her household and rejects Duke Orsino’s love, falling for his servant Cesario, unaware Cesario is Viola in disguise. Her only family is the often-drunk Sir Toby, whom she respects little.
(Bari-tenor, E3-G4) – A powerful nobleman in Illyria, Orsino is lovesick for Lady Olivia but grows fond of Cesario, who is actually Viola. Orsino, an egotist, mopes about his heartache, seemingly more in love with the idea of being in love.
(Mezzo Soprano, F3-Db5) – a jester who used to work for Olivia’s father. After returning, Olivia forgives him for his absence and is pleased to see him. Feste makes a living as a musician and through witty remarks, receiving money from higher social positions. He is based in Olivia’s house but also sings for Orsino.
(Tenor, D3-D5) – Olivia’s senior servant, dreams of marrying her to rise in status. After insulting Sir Toby, Feste, and Maria, they trick him into thinking Olivia loves him and lock him in a dark room, pretending he’s mad.
(Baritone/Bass, C2-E5) – Olivia’s relative, lives in her house and spends much of his time drunk. He invites Sir Andrew, deceiving him into thinking Olivia wants to marry him to con money from him. Resenting Malvolio’s reprimands, Sir Toby and Maria play a cruel trick on Malvolio.
(Bari-tenor, Ab3-E4) – staying with his friend Sir Toby at Olivia’s house, thinks Sir Toby is helping him woo Olivia. In reality, Sir Toby is just taking his money and using him for amusement. Sir Andrew is seen as foolish.
