Mason is the lead character of the film. He is a moody kid who wants to feel mature, but is unsure of himself.
James is the main supporting role in the film. He is Mason's best friend, but unlike Mason, he clings to elements from his childhood and thrives in his youth- he does not want to grow up.
Johnny is a bully who assists his leader, Scott, with tormenting Mason and James. However, Johnny behaves poorly mostly due to his fear of Scott rather than because he is a bad person.
Rudy is a bully who assists his leader, Scott, with tormenting Mason and James. However, unlike Scott, Rudy doesn't enjoy being unnecessarily cruel- he's more of a "take a kid's lunch money" kind of bully, not a sadist.
Blake is a bully who assists his leader, Scott, with tormenting Mason and James. While Blake enjoys beating up other kids almost as much as Scott, he isn't quite as fond of actually doing real damage.
Scott is the leader of a group of bullies who target Mason and James. He is a sadistic boy who was taught by his abusive father that people require pain to grow. As a result, he relishes in any opportunity to "teach" others by dishing out serious pain himself, but whether that is due to his wickedness or the result of years of abuse is unclear.
