16 roles

Frida JensenFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Is the outcast among her fellow high school students, with her classmates describing her as wearing funny hats, conceited, never speaking unless she has to, and sitting in the back row every day. With a chip on her shoulder, Frida’s entries in the journal she has to keep for school describe her frustrations with “idiots who walk through my yard” and the fact that she still has to write in her journal on a snow day. She is often picked on or taunted by her classmates.

EvaFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

An enigmatic young girl who appears suddenly in the middle of a blizzard. She is first seen by Frida, a high school student and social outcast with few friends. Frida discovers Eva lying in the snow, and she tells Frida that she has a headache and needs to get home to Whitestone Farm to find her younger sister. Her sister is blind, and Eva is worried that she may be lost in the blizzard. Initially, it is only Frida that Eva seems to interact with, and the two seem to be building a friendship.

JillFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

She is a member of the group of teenage friends in the play, and is one of the more grounded and mature students. Jill serves as the voice of reason. Benny, Jill’s shy and migraine-plagued classmate, has a crush on Jill and sits behind her in class so he can smell her hair, which he writes “smells like cupcakes” (a result of the bakery that Jill’s parents own). While Benny attributes his constant sniffing to allergies, Jill realizes that he is actually smelling her hair. unknown.

Tina-LouiseFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

She has one of the more colorful personalities among the group of friends. Named after actress Tina Louise of Gilligan’s Island fame, Tina-Louise is popular and fully aware of the fact that she is conventionally pretty. Tina-Marie has had her driver's license for three days when the blizzard hit. Her parents are snowed in at her grandmother’s house in Connecticut, so she takes it upon herself to drive her classmates to the Pretzel Knot for a snow-day lunch.

Helen SpitzerFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

She is quirky and outgoing. Her defining characteristic is a glass eye that she got after her brother shot her with a BB gun when she was six. She enjoys telling people about her eye and asking if they want to see it. When people make fun of her, she takes her eye out, tells the person it is her evil eye, and then runs away.

EthelFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Is a high-strung teenager and student in Vermont. She almost always talks in short but rapid-fire spurts. Ethel is among the students who first discover a news article that shines some light on the true nature of Eva, a girl who suddenly appeared in the snow.

BettyFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenagers and high school students. They are fraternal twins and rarely speak, usually speaking either in unison or in short sentences. Their mother has obsessive-compulsive disorder and makes them dress alike, which sometimes creates confusion since they are not identical twins.

FranFemale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenagers and high school students. They are fraternal twins and rarely speak, usually speaking either in unison or in short sentences. Their mother has obsessive-compulsive disorder and makes them dress alike, which sometimes creates confusion since they are not identical twins.

DanMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenage high school student. He puts on a tough exterior, but this is mostly his acting out as a result of his mother being sick in the hospital. He doesn’t like when anyone talks about his mother and resorts to physical violence when wimpy classmate Arlo off-handedly makes a generalized comment about her (even though the comment was a retort to Dan’s heckling about Arlo’s mother buying feminine hygiene products).

BennyMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenage high school student and one of the more withdrawn members of the friend group. He is plagued with various medical issues, including migraines, asthma, and car sickness. He also claims to have allergies, but this may well be a cover for his constant sniffing of classmate Jill’s hair. He describes her as “the best-smelling person I ever met” and often sits behind her so he can sniff the variety of aromas in her hair. Benny wants to ask Jill out but is too shy.

CliffordMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Unintelligent but well-meaning and kind teenager. He is the closest friend to fellow student Dan. Clifford uses the word ‘awesome’ as a catch-all descriptor for anything he likes. This includes big words and jukeboxes (he wants to own a jukebox factory when he grows up). Clifford is one of the more outgoing students in the group and has little interest in school. He takes a mostly passive role in the action, serving mostly as a companion for Dan.

CrankMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenage student and the school’s resident tough guy. He openly smokes and name-calls and was caught stealing a Michael Bolton CD. He fancies himself somewhat of a lady's man and tries to sweet-talk the girls he finds pretty. He’s especially fond of the more mature student Jill and asks if he can tour her parents’ bakery because he’s thinking of becoming a baker (this isn’t true). When Jill rebuffs him, he reacts with hostility but plays it off by claiming he was kidding.

GusMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Teenager and high school student. He works at the Pretzel Knot restaurant with outcast classmate Frida and cares more about the job than she does, which frustrates him when he’s left working the counter alone. Gus mentions that he’s always left alone. It isn’t clear whether he’s referring only to working the counter or to life in general.

DoofusMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

The appropriately-named Doofus is a teenager and the school’s class clown. Almost nothing he says is serious, and he never misses the opportunity to put on a show and become the center of attention.

VincentMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Intelligent and curious teenager. He enjoys animals and owns a chameleon. He is mature for his age but still a teenager and not above juvenile name-calling when provoked. Vincent is resourceful and uses the local library to find information about the mystery of Eva, a girl who suddenly appeared in the blizzard.

ArloMale13-17 y.o.All ethnicities

Intelligent, well-meaning teenager who tries to stay out of everyone else’s way. He likes Michael Bolton, a fact which he keeps secret for fear of being made fun of. His other secret is that he thinks that the outcast of the group, Frida, is pretty. Arlo serves as a voice of reason and is the one who pieces together that Frida made up the existence of Eva, a mysterious girl who Frida claims to have encountered suddenly in the snow.
