About the project: A modern musical based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including “Candy Man,” “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” “Oompa Loompa Song,” and “Pure Imagination.” The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory…but only to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka’s army of curious Oompa-Loompas. Additional info: Please note: there is a production fee applied. Rehearsals will be Monday – Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm with some Fridays as well. Rehearsals start July 29th and end September 5th with the week of September 2nd being tech week. Actors will not be called to every rehearsal but if they are going for one of the lead roles, they will be called most nights. Performances: Charlie opens September 6th and goes until October 6th. The mysterious and eccentric owner of the world-famous Wonka Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka is a reclusive and imaginative genius known for creating the most extraordinary candies and confections. He is both charismatic and unpredictable, leading the five Golden Ticket winners on a magical tour through his factory. A versatile actor and great singer with dry comedic timing.
The earnest and kind-hearted young protagonist of the story. Charlie comes from a poor family but dreams of a better life. He is selfless, compassionate, and possesses an unwavering moral compass. Charlie’s integrity and pure heart lead him to be the final Golden Ticket winner. He should appear to be the smallest and youngest kid on stage.
A gluttonous, overweight child who finds one of the Golden Tickets. Augustus is known for his insatiable appetite, and his love for food often leads him into trouble. He represents the sin of gluttony in the story. Augustus sings, “More of Him to Love”, which is a humorous and lively number, with a touch of vaudeville style. It has playful and bouncy melodies that emphasize Augustus’s gluttonous nature. He must be able to do a convincing German accent.
A spoiled and bratty young girl who also discovers a Golden Ticket. Veruca is used to getting everything she wants and throws tantrums when she doesn’t. She symbolizes the vice of greed. Ballet training/experience is a must!
A competitive and gum-obsessed girl who is among the Golden Ticket winners. Violet is a world-champion gum chewer and boasts of her accomplishments. She embodies the sin of pride. “Queen of Pop” is a pop-inspired song, reflecting Violet’s obsession with fame and her belief that she is the best. The song incorporates modern pop elements and catchy hooks. Pop belter type voice.
A technology-obsessed boy who secures one of the Golden Tickets. Mike is obsessed with television, video games, and gadgets. He represents the vice of sloth or laziness.
Charlie’s kind-hearted and supportive grandfather. Grandpa Joe is full of life and adventure, and he is Charlie’s companion on the tour of the chocolate factory. He should be able to sing well. He is in his 90s but any adult can audition for this role.
They are the grandparents of Charlie and parents of Mr. and Mrs. Bucket. They are bed ridden but should have a great sense of comedic timing. They get some of the best lines in the show. May double as non dancing Oompa Loompas in the Second Act. Any adults or older teens can audition for these roles but should be able to portray old age well.

Violet’s father, who is just as competitive and boastful as his daughter. He is obsessed with her success and is eager to capitalize on her newfound fame. He should be able to sing well.
Veruca’s affluent father who indulges her every whim and showers her with expensive gifts. He believes money can solve any problem. Great singer.
Augustus’ mom who is constantly trying to satisfy her son’s appetite. Must be able to yodel.
Mike’s mother who struggles to connect with her son due to his obsession with technology. She loves her wine and gets a bit flirtatious. Must have great comedic skills and sing well.
The poor, second-hand vegetable salesman that Charlie buys the only food his family can afford. While a kind woman cares about Charlie and his family, her priority is making a living.
A zany and quick-witted reporter who adds a delightful dash of humor to the piece. The reporter is “on the scene” for all of our golden ticket winners. Will double as an Oompa Loompa in Act 2. A non singing role.
Another reporter who is the bearer of bad news for Charlie’s golden ticket ventures but is full of wacky energy while doing so. He has a bit of a crush on Cherry as well. A non singing role.
