Kid Actors Needed for "Charlotte’s Web" Play
Youth actors aged 6 to 18 years old are invited to audition for "Charlotte’s Web" Play. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: The Children’s Literature Association named this “the best American children’s book of the past two hundred years,” and playwright Joseph Robinette, working with the advice of E.B. White, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling theatrical presentation. All the enchanting characters are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes, “Some Pig.” This is a beautiful play about friendship that will give the audience a beautiful evening of enchantment. Additional info: Memorize your chosen monologue from the list that will be sent to you when you sign up for your audition. Fill out the registration form that will also be sent to you and attach a picture (headshot) - a school picture is fine. (Note- the picture will not be returned.) Come to your audition with your completed form and picture and have a great time! (Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time.) Please note that the participation fee is applied. Rehearsals will be on Tuesday/Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 and Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Players Studio. Rehearsals will begin September 3rd. There will be a mandatory Parent’s Meeting on Monday, August 26th. The meeting will run during the first meeting/read-through with the cast and crew. Production Week is Monday, October 14 to Saturday, October 19 for all cast and crew members for the whole week. Cast members are asked to participate, with a parent, in one of two painting workshops to assist the Scenic Artist in preparing set pieces with base coating. The little runt of the Arables’ newest litter of piglets, he is raised by Fern Arable and lives with her Uncle Homer and Aunt Edith Zuckerman on their farm. He is the main character of the story and is usually very emotional, kind, and innocent.
A spider who helps save Wilbur’s life by writing beautiful words about him in her web. She is very motherly and clever.
A young girl who adopts Wilbur when he is a piglet. She often visits Wilbur on Zuckerman’s farm. Fern grows up through the story and is the only human who can understand the animals when they speak.
Fern’s uncle who runs the farm where Wilbur lives. His farm is the main location of the show. He becomes famous after the messages in Charlotte’s web appear and are reported in the newspaper.
Homer’s wife and Fern’s aunt. She helps Fern take care of Wilbur.
A rat who lives on the farm. Templeton only helps Charlotte and Wilbur when he is promised food. He is a bit selfish and is always on the lookout for food.
Fern’s father, allows her to raise Wilbur after she convinces him to let Wilbur live.
Fern’s older brother. He is an energetic boy who doesn’t share Fern’s sensitivity and love for living creatures and nature.
Fern’s mother, she helps Fern convince Mr. Arable to allow Wilbur to live, even though he’s a little runt.
A hired hand who works on Zuckerman’s farm. He is the first person to find a word in Charlotte’s web. Lurvy cares for Wilbur while he lives on the farm, making sure he gets his “slops” every day.
A stuttering goose who convinces Wilbur to escape during the story. She is protective of her eggs and wary of Templeton, who wants to steal them.
He is Goose’s partner. Gander also stutters and is protective of his children. Gander threatens Templeton often.
One of the oldest animals in the barnyard, she is wise and has lived on the farm the longest.
Sheep’s young child, who doesn’t always think before speaking.
He/She/They tell parts of the story to the audience throughout the show. These actors should have strong storytelling skills.
