About the project: Seussical is a musical comedy by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, based on the many children's stories of Dr. Seuss, with most of its plot being based on Horton Hears a Who!, Gertrude McFuzz, and Horton Hatches the Egg while incorporating many other stories. The musical's name is a portmanteau of "Seuss" and the word "musical". Following its Broadway debut in 2000, the show was widely panned by critics, and closed in 2001 with huge financial losses. It has spawned two US national tours and a West End production, and has become a frequent production for schools and regional theatres. Additional info: Auditioners will sing music from the show and be asked to read from the script. Audition materials and music can be found in the document attached. The Mayor's son, he is a Who that is always finding trouble. Bright, creative, and inadvertently mischievous. Possesses a wildly expansive imagination and finds solace in his friendship with Horton. Jojo is a treble singer.
Our story's omniscient narrator, he is fun loving and enjoys rhyming. Pops up throughout the story to help the audience. Wise and attentive. The Cat in the Hat sings in the Baritone range. It cannot be transposed up the octave.
Our story's main character, he is a compassionate and gentle elephant. Commonly misunderstood because of his larger size. He is protective and loving of all creatures in the jungle. Horton sings in the Baritone range.
Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor are parents trying hard to raise a child with a big imagination. These Whos may get aggravated with JoJo, but they love him dearly. They try their best to make the right choices as parents, even if JoJo doesn't always understand them. They are also upstanding members of their community.
Very self-conscious about her one-feather tail. Gertrude gains confidence throughout the show, changing from an anxious, nervous, shy bird into someone whose self-worth doesn't rest on her appearance. In other words, Gertrude realizes what's truly important in her life.
Self-centered, vain, and manipulative. She ultimately means no harm, but she's immature and makes selfish decisions.
The Wickersham Brothers are not bad guys! They tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at another's expense.
The Bird Girls are a fabulous group of birds who know everything there is to know about the goings on in the jungle and support Mayzie throughout the show. The Bird Girls serve as narrators in the jungle and should be confident dancers
Loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. She's got a lot of attitude but isn't mean - she's just very confident and unafraid to tell it like it is.
General Schmitz is bursting with pride at the military academy he runs, and the boys he turns out. He is not sadistic, mean or abusive. He is proud! He is doing the right thing for his boys! He is making the world a better place!
Sour Kangaroo's feisty child, pint- sized, but with a big personality, following in their mother’s footsteps.
Yertle resides in the Jungle of Nool and is the authoritative judge who presides over Horton's trial.
