August Dupin, within his Manhattan residence. Dupin has just returned from his vacation to find the New York press filled with the news of the unsolved murder of Marie Roget, a beautiful, young cigar shop clerk whose body was found floating in the Hudson River. Dupin is visited by Lon Garrison, Attorney-General for the State of New York and Miss Roget’s guardian since her relocation to the States from her home in Paris. Having proven himself a skilled amateur investigator, Dupin is entreated by Garrison to help clear the name of Garrison’s son, Benjamin, considered a prime suspect in the girl’s murder.
